Becoming a Google Developer Groups (GDG) organizer  was never a part of my plan. I was never the guy who participated in hackathons or built complex tech projects for competitions. My true interest has always been administration, leadership, and creating real change on the ground level

Back when I started college, I saw a pattern—students focused on just technical skills, but very few worked on networking, leadership, and personal growth. Mujhe samajh aaya ki sirf technology seekh lena hi kaafi nahi, uska impact bhi zaroori hai. And also my sister encouraged me to become a member of any society in university. That's when I started taking initiatives towards this wonderful journey.

I organized workshops when I officially became the President of Computer Science Society and events but there were very less students who took me seriously (their pov was like phle ki trah ye bhi kuch nhii krega..)

But the number of students increased from ~10 to 100s............

And GDSCs are university-based communities where students collaborate to learn, build projects, and grow their skills with the aim of helping the local developers community.

The process :

Google Developers to helpGroups are (GDG) are community-driven groups of developers, typically city-based, where working professionals organise events, build projects, focused on Google technologies.

Talking about the selection process, every year around March -April the applications for leads are opened.

GDSC, GDG leads are chosen by google developers program managers.

The Selection Process: More Than Just an Application

The journey to becoming a Google Developer Groups (GDG) Organizer isn’t as simple as filling out a form. It’s a multi-step process that challenges not just your technical knowledge but also your leadership potential and decision-making skills.

Step 1: The Application – Your Story, Your Voice

Applicants are required to write detailed essays answering specific questions on Advocu, reflecting their vision, leadership mindset, and community-driven approach. But writing isn’t enough—you need to speak your story.

A key part of the application is recording and submitting a video, where you share your thoughts, aspirations, and what makes you the right fit for the role. It’s not just about what you say, but how you say it—your confidence, clarity, and authenticity matter.

Step 2: The Diagnostic & Aptitude Test – More Than Just IQ

This isn’t your usual aptitude test—it’s conducted online under live proctoring, with your camera and microphone on throughout the exam

It’s divided into two sections:

Aptitude Test: Tests logical reasoning, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
Leadership Test: Sounds unusual, right? How does a test determine leadership?
Well, even we don’t fully understand the evaluation metrics, but the questions feel like something straight out of personality assessments like MBTI or Enneagram.
Rather than right or wrong answers, you select responses from a scale of most likely to least likely, testing your decision-making, adaptability, and leadership tendencies.

Step 3: The Interview – Where Leadership Takes Center Stage

Once you clear the first two rounds, the final step is an interview where Google assesses your vision, leadership potential, and ability to bring impact to the community.
It’s less about what you’ve done and more about how you think, how you lead, and how you inspire others.
Not just a selection process—it’s a transformation journey. 🚀

What I received from Google Developer Groups??

Becoming a GDG Organizer is not just about organizing events—it’s about growing, learning, and being part of a global network. Here’s what I gained from this incredible journey:

🎁 Swags & Exclusive Perks – Cool GDG-branded goodies, stickers, and merchandise to celebrate milestones.

📚 Access to Premium Courses & Technical Series – Hands-on learning from industry experts on cutting-edge topics.

🚀
Early Access to Advanced Technologies – Stay ahead with insights into Google’s latest innovations and tools.

🤝 Networking & Collaboration – Connect with Google experts, industry leaders, and fellow developers worldwide.

🌍 Exposure & Recognition – Build credibility, expand my reach, and get noticed in the tech and startup ecosystem.

📢 Meetups & Virtual Trainings
– Engage in workshops, hackathons (though I never participated in them 😉), and knowledge-sharing sessions.

Being part of GDG is more than just a title—it’s an opportunity to influence, inspire, and make a real impact in the developer community. 🔥

Note: If a GDG community already exists then you should not apply for a new one as there
will be very less chances of selection because koi point hi nhi bnta ek campus mein 2 clubs create krne ka so try for others like Microsoft learn student ambassador program (MLSA), Google Woomen TechMakers Program (WTM), Geeks for Geeks, many more Google program also (make a research).
